Auspicium Melioris Aevi

Sons of a Better Age. Rjc's motto. Admittedly, yes i AM impressed by the Rafflesian spirit. Was absolutely wonderful. You go through life thinking that you are part of the best and ONLY family with spirit in the world. Then suddenly, as you nonchalently gaze at another college's activities, cheers, wit, banter, laughter, and pride, and you get that fiery feeling in your heart, achievable only in the highest points of a council term.

No wait, before you start shouting bloody treason and crucify the bughedil, dont get me wrong. I love the Saints spirit. Everytime i experience it, im reminded once again why i chose SAJC over RJ or any other college, and how, in the end, it's all worth the sacrifice. SA's my life, my family, my all, and ive never regretted the decision. (aw dat sounds really mushy and icky-poo. ah what the heck) Yes i do love SAJC, but i sometimes forget that there are other families out there, other institutions with a cameraderie as strong as ours, and there's definitely alot we can learn from them. RJC's one of them.

Took a little trip down to RJC this morning with 2 fellow councillors to watch the investiture of the 23rd students council as well as the stepping down of the 22nd.(and of course, to give debbie a surprise and return the favour by popping by. But she spotted me before the thing started. Damn.) And i must say, it was quite an experience. It wasnt the usual council ceremony where you sit and clap politely because you're afriad the principal may be looking at you and wondering what a prick you are if you dont clap. The whole process of it: The grand entrance of the two councils, Principal William Hodge's meaningful speech, the exchange of blazers, 22nd council's heartwarming song item, 23rd council's hilarious song and dance item, and not to forget our 2 tour guides' warm reception. (hello Gek! wait is that how you spell your name?)
For the first time in a long while, i clapped because i meant it.

I suppose if there was one problem in my college, it'd be that we sometimes follow traditions so ferverntly that we forget: its not how we do it, but why we do it. Often, our ceremonies are wrapped up in formalities and social niceties that there's no room for the whole meaning of why the ceremony's being held in the first place. Now again, dont get me wrong, i think SA's ceremonies are still meaningful nontheless (that tingly warm mushy feeling still comes to my heart when i think of Commendation) but we can always learn from other people, and i think RJ would be one of them.

If any of the councillors in RJ happen to stumble upon this blog, thank you so much for inviting us again, it was truely an experience.

(actually, this entry was supposed to be much longer. But i accidentally pressed something and deleted everything. So i typed what i could remember all over again. How dumb can you get? and its 12.45am i suppose i have better things to do than type everything for a third time. Like sleeping.)

Oh yeah. I just watched American Idol. i dont see what the big deal is. So Ruben won. Whoopeedoo. And American hosts really know how to keep you hooked on a show even though you dont give a damn about it. You only realise it after the show when you sit and wonder "now why did i go through 8 commercial breaks for anyway?"
